Title: Incarcerated.
Medium: Found Object Size: 9 x 9 in Exhibition Text: The artist is conveying through his piece the message of holding back and restrain through a person's life in the world today. The artist utilizes a wood made cell to portray the message of some type of barrier that demonstrates the trapped feeling that he is demonstrating. The artwork is representing the idea of a sacred idea of the mind and oneself where how a person may feel in different situations through being restrained to do so. From making bad decisions and keeping the intelligence of doing the correct thing trapped. |
Process
Through this project I wanted to present through my piece the idea that I had junior year for my sacred vessel but I did not quite achieve that goal. I think clay was not my strongest area so I went through a different direction utilizing different materials but going through the same type of meaning through the project. When I began the project, I started by gathering my materials and first I used popsicle sticks as the wooden frame for the jail cell. I glued two pieces together and waited until the glue was dry. Then I glued them together to make a square and I made 5 sqaures. After I had glued them together and let the glue dry, I painted the sticks with black paint both inside and outside (did inside before the application of the glue). The hard part of this process was keeping the sticks as straight as possible because they kept moving when the glue was drying. Also that some of the popsicle sticks were bent, so I had to put some support so they would still glue to the other pieces. After that I taped the Pieces together to get cube to get the idea of a jail cell.

Inspiration
My inspiration came from artist who used found obejcts and made it into art. My artist inspiration is Tony Cragg and his piece "Stack" and Stuart Haygarth. These artists based their work on finding objects that were either thrown away or they found them somewhere. And from those objects they have made them into something that has meaning. Through this piece, I found popsicle sticks and wire to make something out of it and create a message through those objects from what they represent. |
Reflection
At the beginning of this project, my initial start was to do this project made out of clay. I had planned to make it different (sacred vessel) by being a new idea. And also have the same idea as the one from last year but make the project better. But then I thought that I was not going to have time to make clay and have it dry on time. So, I decided to make a different approach into using different materials. I found a bag of popsicle sticks in my house and it gave me the idea to create it the way I did. It was a different thing to do but I see it as the same idea that I had but improvised it and made it out of different materials. What I struggled with this project was that it took some time for the glue and paint to dry for me to move on to the next step and that had just taken away my time. Also, that sometimes the sticks would slip with the glue ans they were not straight. I would change the shape of the brain inside and make it more better and looking like one. What I liked about it is that it showed my initial idea that I had.

Meaning Behind My Piece
Through this piece, the artist is showing meaning through found objects and make those objects have that meaning. The meaning the artist is conveying a message of imprisonment of oneself of keeping themselves shut and through that, they do not take action for things that have to be with their life and have regrets for not trying out those things. The title of "Imprisoned" conveys that lots of people do not use their minds for good and themselves to accomplish something. The idea is to present through the sticks a jail that shows the emptiness and imprisoned idea of keeping oneself from using their ability of their intelligence becaus they choose not to. The wire is to form those objects (brain and person) to convey why we close our minds of control to do things like we would like to but don't. The overall message that I am conveying is that things that keep us from making good choices like the jail represents the bad things we do and the lack of wire and being the brain shows the lack of improving and staying inside that same concept.

ACT Questions
- Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork. I am able to identify that my work was made out of found objects which comes from the cause of that the inspiration comes from artists who made their work from found objects and the effect on the art is that the artist made the same attempt to create art of found objects.
- What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall point of view of the artist on his work is that he used objects that were found to creeate something out of those objects and through that make them have a meaning which is what I want to show through this piece from the found objects that I used. - What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? I found out that the ideas of people to use objects that are not seen to make art and make art out of them. This was found when I we were introduced to this topic during my Junior Year of High School.
- What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
My central idea was to use the objects that I found to make my artwork and why those objects were used to convey my message through my artwork. My theme was the mind and how many people do not take advantage of things and do not work hard because they choose not to and makes it look that their potential is not great and is being kept away. - What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? Inferences I made where that these artist really took in to mind looking around where they live or asking people for the objects that they used and for one of them, from where they got them it already was the message to show something about the country
