Title: Caged Mind
Medium: Clay Size: 13 x 3 cm Exhibition Text: The Purpose of this project was to create an object made out of clay that had a deep meaning of something that is sacred to oneself. For me what was sacred is the mind and how one uses it. Most people today don't utilize their intelligence as much as before. Now many students don't see school as to much as importance. And their brain is not put to good use as is locked up. |
Process
This project was based on something sacred. I had to think of things that are sacred to me. I had ideas right away, the hard part was finding the shape of the clay that would go with my theme. Also trying to make it look clean as I could so it could look good. The hard part at first was making sure my clay didn't break apart because that started to happen to my sculpture after I had formed it into a rectangle. I think it needed more clay or less wet clay because that's what think that was making it weak and almost breaking.

Brainstorm
Thinking of thing sacred to are many. I have many things I hold sacred, so ideas to me came fast for the theme. Not much for the look of the project or the overall form. Also it has to be a deep meaning. Something that is really sacred to you and how you see it as an overall theme in the world or to you as the project. |
Sketching
Then in my sketchbook, I drew from the themes I had brainstormed, and I started to sketch how I would like them to look like. I looked at religion, oneself, and family. I had a total of 3 sketches for this project. |
Final Product
Then, after thinking hard, I decided to use my second sketch and do that for my sacred vessel. After wedging my clay, I used the roller to flat out the clay and made rectangles to make the cage for the brain. Then I used the clay I had left to try and make a brain. |
Inspiration
For this piece, I got inspiration from my environment or my culture. More like things I see that I think I see in me and others. The mind is something really valuable in the world because it is what we use to make decisions and for our intelligence that change the world. Seeing how most people don't view it that way is why I did what I did. I had also inspiration from famous sculptures like "The Thinker" by Auguste Rodin and sculptures by Michelangelo. The way they use their skills to make such great art, inspired me to make my own. |
Meaning of My Piece
The mind is what drives the world to work. It's what makes the world move and create advancements for our future. How I see most people today, most students don't put enough effort into a better life or for their future. Instead make it not so good. I chose to make like some cage and a brain in it to represent that blockage to show how they have their mind closed to do things for the better. Also to think about how sacred the mind is to every single person. It identifies what they know and know who they are because it's what sends messages for us to react and be able to respond. And then it depends how we are looked at through our decisions and how we respond to things.

Reflection
The project wasn't difficult itself to begin with. It took me a while before I started to work on it. The hard part for this project for me was making the cage. I couldn't quite make it equal and seem clean because it was to weak or the clay was still to soft and it changed from the bottom where it was the most weak. and also make it look more equal and straight because the clay was to out or skinny from some sides and it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to look like.
