Title: Apparition
Medium: Paint on Canvas Size: 1 x 1 ft Exhibition Text: This project represents a religious event that was said to happen a long time ago in Mexico. It shows when the Virgin of Guadalupe to appears to a man named Juan Diego who she asks him a favor to ask the town's priest to build a temple for her and he asks the priest who asks for a sign that is true. And that is the image of her in a cloth where it is now in a Cathedral in Mexico City. The paintings then represent a part of the history within Christianity (Catholic). This piece conveys a story within that religion. A story told and celebrated by almost all Mexico. |
Process
I decided to make my second project to relate it to something that is a part of my life and inspired by. I like Michelangelo's work on how he created different types of religious art that comes from the bible. So I decided to make something that happened long ago that I believe in which is when the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to a man named Juan Diego and asked for a favor. First I created the canvas which are small (1 x 1 ft) and then applied the gesso. I drew how I thought it had looked on paper by looking at different images that represented that and then took my own ideas. Then I drew on the canvas for the first one to start painting it and it took me about 3 hours to complete and the same for the second canvas.

Inspiration
My inspiration came from the Catholic Religion and the artist Michelangelo. My religion is an important part of me and as an artist I want to show through my art that it is like a passion for me because I like learning about it and being involved in things with religion. And I wanted to represent my art through something that comes from the Catholic Church and that is what I did. Michelangelo inspired my work through his piece "Pieta" and other works. It inspired me because these works represent something that comes from the church like from stories of the bible and other things. And it inspired me because it brought me the idea to create something that also comes from events that happened in the Catholic religion. And what I liked from his work and other artists that made work based on the same concept, was that they made the work really represent the feeling that the moment when the event occured like in the Pieta, Mary is carrying her son and there is a strong connection between that and what happened. And the way that the sculpture is being presented how his skills are impresive in the piece. The Last Judgement, where there is also a representation of something that is said to happen some time in the future if the world is to end. |
Reflection
Through the process of completing this project there were things that I did not like and things that I did like about it. I struggled with blending colors and mostly for the second canvas. That was because my idea was for the background to be like the inside of a church so I wanted it to look like wood but I was not able to get that color and use it in the canvas. So I would change the background color and other things to improve my craftsmanship in this piece. What I liked about it is that it came out the way that I wanted it because it represents the idea of my piece which represents an event that happened and the way that it is shown to demonstrate the piece. And also maybe create a third one to show when the priest did not believe him and when he goes back to tell her and later on when he gets the sign the Bishop wanted. Overall I liked the way my piece is presented but I would make a few changes on it to make it look more cleaner. |
Meaning Behind My Piece
Through this piece, I used a story that happened a long time ago through the Catholic Religion. It is said that in Mexico that One day, a man named Juan Diego walking through some hills called "El Cerro de Tepeyac", where he was going to church and there he recieved a sign from the Vigin of Guadalupe where she appeared to him. She asked him for a favor, to ask the town's priest to create a temple for her ( now the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe). When he told the Bishop he did not believe a word he said and told him he needed a sign to know if it is true what Juan is saying. Later he went back to the place she appeared to him and he spoke to her what the Bishop said. The Virgin told him to come back later and she will give him what the Bishop wants. When he goes back, she tells him to collect flowers and take them with the cloth he had. When he got to the church and let go of the cloth, the Bishop was shocked that he was saying the truth because there in the blanket was the image of her. Through this piece I wanted to do what artists like Michelangelo did who used different events in the bible in his work. And in this piece I used the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

It was helpful that through Art History, I learned about the artist that came from my research through utilizing the knowledge learned from that class.
- What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? While researching about the artist I found that many of his art pieces had came from someone asking them to make that piece and that also that influence mostly from the Catholic religion. And through his work he reveals things that have happened connecting to the religion.
- What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The central idea around my research was religion as I wanted to make a work that represents as well something that has happened connection to the Catholic religion.
- What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? I concluded that he had been called out by churche's to make an art piece about their religion. And also how he presented his art through the detail that he used like in sculpture's, using designs that were difficult to make.
