Title: City Sorrow
Medium: Paint on Canvas Size: 1ft x 1ft Exhibition Text The three canvases have a meaning throughout the process of all portraying a city and its meaning. The first canvas was sort of a self-portrait of me looking out into the other side of the city in water. The second canvas demonstrates how I look at the city in both the good of it and the bad of it. The third and final canvas shows the way me as a person has affected the city. This was intended to show how the city is in its two sides. And how I look at my world and affect it. |
Process
In the process of creating this piece, I needed to think a lot of how I see myself as an artist. How I also affect the world around me in the process of my work and my life. I brainstormed different ideas in my mind as we were being demonstrated of the project.

Brainstorm
As we were being introduced to this project, I felt I didn't do what was required and what I had to do. Later on when I saw examples from past Juniors and my peers as well, I had an idea. I started to write down the requirements that were asked from us. |
Sketch
After being introduced to the project, I had started writing down ideas of how I would like to start my 3 canvases. Then I began looking through different art movements, artists and their work. What I did is incorporate in different canvases a different artist and inspiration from one of their pieces. |
Final
After deciding and creating my final sketches in my sketch book. I started to create my three canvases by gathering 12, 1 ft stretchers. Than I gathered the canvas and I layed it on the floor. The I did the same with the stretchers already connected together, I cut the correct size for the canvas for the 3 boards, and I stapled them together. Then I painted the canvases with gesso. |
Inspiration
The artist Rene Magritte inspired me for the first two of my canvases. What inspired me from son of man was on my first canvas. The basic design of the man was what inspired me to make myself standing looking to the water with a cross in my face. And in the False Mirror, I had a similar idea to create an eye where it reflects what I think the city looks like. For my 3rd and last canvas, It was more of an inspiration of my own. From experience, I realized that what I make and do, is what can also impact where I am. That is why I decided to create it where my arms are over the buildings of a city. Also my sleeves are a road to show that overall process of how I affect the city. And for my first canvas, I was inspired by The Son of man. I made myself standing alike the painting with a cross in my face to show my religion. As well as not knowing what I am looking at much like I think in The Son of Man. |
Reflection
When I was introduced to this project, I had already thought of what I wanted to do. At first I had thought of many ideas for the three canvases. I drew them down on my sketchbook. I erased them later on because they didn't really speak out to me. I didn't draw them or thought of them like I wanted to. Later on I had another idea when I was looking through different artists such as Magritte. The struggles throughout this project was creating the basic idea of what I want each canvas to look like. The hard part was figuring out which colors I wanted to use. It was hard, but then I decided to use blue and purple as the main background colors. At the end, I liked this project because it allowed me to understand me more as an artist.

The Meaning Behind My Piece
When I started this project, I was thinking of how I saw the City of Milwaukee. I saw Milwaukee between a struggle between two sides, the good and the bad things that happen. In recent years, the city of Milwaukee has become really dangerous where there have been a lot of homicides. As well as children missing. I see that as a problem and what the city needs to fix. That's where my second canvas of the eye comes. One side is blue and clear with the sun out, the other one demonstrates the city on fire and it's dark. The eye has tears coming out from that side of the eye. I see that description as me feeling bad about what is going on and how Milwaukee used to be a better city. The first canvas represents me looking out into the lake. I involved my religion with a cross behind me and no arms. I meant that to show that I have god by my side to able to guide and show a better city. Me having no hands demonstrates how I am hold back from many things in my life. The third canvas shows my hands looking at them from the front into the city. My arms are a road which represents the road I take with making decisions and how it affects the city. And not having my hands over them and instead how I would look at them, shows how I am not able to make much of a change.
