Title: Hope
Size: 17.5 x 12.5 cm Medium: Dry Point |
Exhibition Text:
The dove in the middle represents the holy spirit, which is the advocate that Jesus left us after he resurrected and went to his father god. The holy spirit represent hope to Catholic's that god is still with us and forever will be with us. I chose to use a cross in the back of the dove to represent how Jesus rose back to life with even more life and light were the Holy Spirit was left to continue that light in those who follow Jesus. It shows the good and the bad with the scratches on the bottom and light rays from the top. The inspiration of this piece is from my own culture and what my parents have taught me. |
Process
The process of creating this piece wasn't to much work but creating it was. At first when scratching it on the plastic plate was hard because at first you have to scratch the drawing into it and it took time to do that because for one I had to make sure it was deep enough to get the ink in and also the sharp end of the scratcher wasn't sharp enough to go through. Also because the curves where hard to get on the plate. Then after that I did the inking process which took me only 2 tries to complete.

1. Brainstorm
You have to start brainstorming ideas of what the Dry Point is going to be or can be. For me it was easy for the theme because our teacher said it be better to keep the same theme behind obsession which I kept as religion but changed the theme a little. At the end I started to sketch or jot down ideas of what I want it to be based on religion. |
2. Planning
Start planning out and sketching after you brainstorm ideas and choose one. For me I went with the idea of hope for my project. Complete at least 2 sketches or more. |
3. Final Sketch/Process
Now from your sketches, choose the one that best suits you for the project. |
Cultural Inspiration
For my Dry Point design would be religion relating to my block print because It's something that is really important around my life. I have a lot of faith on what I believe and respect for it and what I have to follow in my religion. I'm a Catholic and was taught to be following this religion from my parents when I was a young child. Every morning I pray to God for another day of life and for my family to be protected from harm. In Mexico, being Catholic is the most common religion there. Being Hispanic my parents were born there and taught the same thing. We pray for someone when there is a problem or for hope. My culture inspired me because I have always been attached to my religion because I was taught when I was a child and I have grown more into it in learning about it. I help out at my church and attend every Sunday. On Saturday school for the children, I help out at the school by helping the teachers or selling snacks the kids. This seems as an obsession to me since I'm so attached to it so I decided to keep the same aspect but change the meaning of it. |
Reflection
This process was rather fun and challenging in a way. I enjoyed expressing what my religion is because it's part of me so people can know me more. The process of completing it wasn't long but scratching the plastic plate was. It took a while to make it deep enough for the ink to go through and as well as some of the curves that the drawing had. It took me 2 tries for the inking process which was easy to do it but I had to make sure that I had added enough and removed some so excess wouldn't have been seen on the paper. Something I would changed would be add more lines at the bottom and add the feathers on the dove and make it more alike from both sides. |
Meaning Behind My Piece
My Dry Point meant a lot to me in a way of seeing it for what the name I gave it even if it is as simple as it looks. The title "Hope", means that when something happens around me that scratches my life for the bad, I know God is there for me to guide me. The Holy Spirit was left by Jesus, I decided to use it to represent Jesus alongside his cross. The light rays on the top represent the light of hope that Jesus gives because I believe that he is there for me lighten up my life when I'm down and know that he can defeat the bad in me. The scratches depict that sad feeling but I wanted also to show that It's at the bottom whereas the cross and the Holy Spirit is on the top where it shows how superior it is to the bad. Where Jesus triumphs over the bad. The Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove that descended from the skies in scorching flames to guide us and keep us safe. I wanted to depict from all of this the idea of hope in your faith where you work hard you can accomplish many things.
