Title: Milwaukee Flag
Size: 10 x 16 cm Medium: Drawing |
Exhibition Text
The flag design created represents what our city of Milwaukee is all about in what there is and what has happened. There were multiple ideas for the flag and it uses 3 colors where we were limited to use to much colors. It had to be basic and easy for a child to be able to draw the Flag. It represents the city in what it is best known for. Our great lake Michigan, our production of beer and other products, and the hard working people who make this city keep on running and working hard. |
Planning
After we watched the video and went through the presentation about building the flag, I started to brainstorm ideas. I needed to have a flag with 2-3 colors and a basic design that I wanted. I created 4 sketches for the flag and then I incorporated parts of those sketches into my final design for the Flag. I also used some of the original designs of the current flag and made it more simple. |
Brainstorming
Start by brainstorming possible ideas for your flag. Understand the requirements of creating the flag. In order to create the flag you have to have a meaning for the flag of what does it represents that shows what your city can be or state or country. Start having creative ideas such as symbols and/or colors that can represent what you think means in your city. |
Planning Sketches
Start sketching possible flag designs that you might want to use for the project. Show symbols and 2-3 colors that represent what you are trying to show. Show what you think represents the city the best in its own unique way. |
Final Sketch
After sketching out possible designs for your flag, start adding all your ideas into one single flag where it can be your final flag. |
Meaning of My Flag
When it came to creating a flag that represents Milwaukee, their were many things I could incorporate like things such as seals, sports, numbers, history, and also things like the nature of Milwaukee such as its animals also our city. The flag that I created shows how Milwaukee has evolved, the industrialization how it has grown and still is growing and it keeps producing, so I chose a gear to represent that. But more the people that work and worked so hard to get this city where it is today. I chose it to look kind of old fashion, the gear, because I want to show that it represents who made this city and get it to where it is now, the people that encouraged and inspired those who are still making it great. I chose a background color of blue and a baby blue for what we are best known for, our beautiful lake Michigan. The barley to represent our beer production in Milwaukee. I also wanted to show a comparison between the gear and the barley. I want to show that we are still a city that is very industrialized and also still very old fashion with farming and other types of things where we don't usually rely much on new technology. Such as other cities that aren't much old fashioned such as big cities like New York where it's very industrialized with new technology where they rely on more. All the buildings have begun to be like that where the billboards are all electronic. I wanted to show that are city is growing like that as well but also not forgetting how we got here that we are still going to be very agricultural.

Artistic Inspiration
For my flag project, my inspiration to create where from the designers called Chermayeff, Geimar, and Haviv . The reason why they inspired me was because of all the logos they created. When I saw all they had created for many big corporations, it inspired me to create something of my own. Maybe I didn't incorporate their designs but what inspired me from them was that if they created logos like that, I could basically do the same thing but in the flag I had to create. Where for creating things like that, inspired me more into becoming interested in the flag project where they don't tell you what you have to do, alike the logos, and where you incorporate your creativity to something that you think that should be for that thing and in my case, A flag for the city of Milwaukee. |
Reflection
Creating the flag wasn't that hard of a project but it doesn't mean it was easy. The hard thing was coming up with ideas for a design of the flag and design of the flag but after I found the design I wanted, it wasn't that hard anymore to complete it. I used three different colors, blue for the background, yellow for the barkely, and grey for the fish and gear. At first I tried to use Microsoft's paint, but it didn't work out as how I wanted to. Then I tried to use Adobe Photoshop but, I wasn't able to use it because the school computers kept crashing on me so at the end I decided to draw. Also even if it worked at home, I don't have access to Photoshop. Then I felt it was easier to draw the flag then instead rely on technology all the time. |
