Title: Forgiveness
Medium: Block Print Size: 23 x 15 cm Exhibition Text I Focused on creating a block print that is based on a theme of obsession. The obsession shown in this piece is religion of the Catholic Church. What inspired this piece was based on culture. All his life he was shown to pray to god whenever he felt down and upset or needed guidance in something or prey for those who are in need. It's based on the theme of the obsession of prayer. When someone feels bad or needs help, they tend to pray for God or whatever it is they believe in when they feel upset. |

3. Process Work
In the process, it was hard carving out the block print because you had to use the right tools because some wouldn't carve in, or it would be hard to carve in. And it took time to carve in deep enough. After that I did the inking process where it took me 5 tries to complete it. |
Cultural Inspiration
The inspiration in my piece was my culture. Ever since I could remember when I was a little kid, my parents would always wake me and my sister at 6:30 am to go to Sunday church. We belong to the catholic church, and at first I never wanted to wake up because like other children, I thought it was to early and i was still sleepy. Also because I still didn't learn anything about the Catholic Church other that who is God, his son Jesus, and Mary, his mother(a.k.a The Virgin of Guadalupe). But now I understand why they took me there and I am grateful for that. I learned more about it when I went to Saturday school, where I was getting prepared for my First Communion. For my piece, I wanted to do something that showed what I learned, that God is my guidance. When I learned about the Catholic Church, my parents taught me how to prey. I based my piece on me praying to God. I was taught to prey to god for someone that needed help like when a family member was sick or when I needed guidance. That's what I used for my art where I'm kneeling to God for help and guidance. |
The Meaning Behind My Piece
In my artwork I decided to call it forgiveness for a reason that is not only for myself, but also for other people as well. First of all the background of it is the obsession for religion. The religion I chose is of the Catholic Church. It all goes to what my parents have taught me ever sense I was a small child. At first they taught me how to prey where It is something called in Spanish called "persignarse" where with your hand you lay your thumb next to the finger next to that is pointing out with the other three separated a little. From there I learned how to prey and for what. For the meaning in my block print, it shows how after something sad happened and I need guidance, I am leading down to God for help. To demonstrate that I wasn't well I used rain drops to demontrate a depressing feeling and I enlightened the cross to show that God can heal you when you are down an need help because he will always give back guidance and help in someway that only he knows. That's why I called it "Forgiveness" where I need help or ask for a sorry or I am sad, God can help me and will forgive me.

Reflection
The block print process at first was easy to start for me because the ideas for it had already come to my mind about my religion so since I had already created the sketch, all I had to do is to transfer it into the block print plate. After sketching into the plate, all I had to do is chose from three different tools to see which one(s), would be the best to carve out the design I created from the plastic plate. The hardest part in this project was carving the plate because at first I didn't knew what I was doing and how to do it. Also it seemed hard because you had to put force into the carving so you would carve out the excess plastic from the plate or what you want to be seen in the paper. The transferring process wasn't that hard just that it took time to do it because you have to make sure you were applying the right amount of ink so after it transferred into the paper, you wouldn't have seen any white spots. I'd say, that the only hard part of transferring it was that you had to make sure you did it good so you wouldn't have to do it as many times. At the end, it was all okay.
